Every investor loses money at some point. But the ones who lose the most, missing out on returns, are the ones who let their emotions overpower their instincts. I’m Matthew Fatz, Financial Planner.

A behavioral mindset isn’t about removing emotion from investing. It’s about recognizing the emotion before it becomes a decision, and building a process strong enough to survive it. We’ve seen this play out multiple times this decade already. Each time it looked different. Each time, the emotional response was the same.

March 2020. Markets dropped 34% in 33 days. The world shut down. Fear was everywhere. Many investors sold. The recovery was complete in five months.

2022. Rates rose, inflation surged, and the S&P fell 27% over the year. This time it was slow and grinding. No single moment of panic. Just a slow bleed that convinced people the old rules no longer applied. Some repositioned. They missed the 2023 rebound.

Early 2025. Tariff announcements sent markets into a sharp, disorderly sell-off. The urge to act, to do something, felt overwhelming. That urge is the risk.

And today, Iran war rattled markets as stocks neared correction territory. Oil above $100. Gasoline prices up. The headlines have been alarming.

The impulse to move to safety is real. It always is. Fear always feels rational in the moment. That’s what makes behavioral risk so different. It doesn’t look like a mistake until it’s already made. A sound investment strategy isn’t just built to make money. It’s built to survive your instincts. The real question isn’t whether the market will test you again. It’s whether your plan is ready when it does.
